Mr. Sheehy was born in Minneapolis, and grew up in St. Louis Park, Minnesota, where he graduated from high school in 1981. He played in bands in high school and was the captain of the St. Louis Park High School hockey team.  After spending one year at Hamline University, Mr. Sheehy transferred to the University of Minnesota, where he obtained a B.A. degree in Sociology in 1985.

In 1989, Mr. Sheehy graduated from the University of Minnesota Law School, cum laude (with honors). He then served as a judicial law clerk to The Honorable John E. Simonett, Associate Justice, Minnesota Supreme Court, during the 1989-1990 term.

From 1990 until 1995, Mr. Sheehy was an associate handling complex litigation for the second biggest law firm in Minnesota, Faegre & Benson, LLP. From 1995 until 1997, Mr. Sheehy represented clients in intellectual property litigation, e.g., copyright, trademark and patent cases at a boutique Minneapolis firm. Since 1995, Mr. Sheehy has been a member of Federal Public Defender Private Attorney Panel, representing indigents charged with federal crimes.

Mr. Sheehy opened his office in 1997. Since then, Mr. Sheehy has represented clients in state and federal courts in criminal, commercial and personal injury cases. He has tried cases in state and federal court.

Mr. Sheehy represents the Hennepin Bar Association in the annual Barristers Cup Hockey Tournament and coaches youth hockey in Minneapolis. An avid musician, Mr. Sheehy writes and records his original songs.
